This is the combo I’m shooting while my M9 is in for calibration. I must say that I have really enjoyed shooting with the M8 so far. The 35mm Summicron looks great attached to it and shoots fantastic pics due to the cropped sensor. The 35mm Cron must cover the sweet spot on the M8 sensor because the files I’m getting are pretty impression as far as sharpness goes. I’m really glad that I sent my M9 away now because the sharpness of this combo is superb. If my M9 comes back as good I will be delighted.

Shot details :- ISO 200, 50mm, 0 ev, f/2.8, 1/125

Took a trip into town today to send my Leica M9 off to the Doctor in Solms. This was a reluctant move because I have grown very attached to this camera over the past year and a bit. Over the last while I noticed that my M9 was slightly out of focus at close distances, around 1 meter or less. Everything would look fine in the range finder patch, but on closer inspection things were not in focus. After a little experimentation I found that I needed to focus a little further away in order to get what I needed in focus. Obviously this problem was more apparent with the lens wide open and at longer focal lengths. For example, the problem was not that noticeable with my 35mm Summicron but was clearly visible with my 50mm Summilux. Now I’m not talking crazy out of focus, just enough to soften the desired plane of focus and enough to annoy me.

Conns Cameras (www.connscameras.ie/) were very good to me during the whole process of diagnosing and testing out this problem. They were kind enough to lend me a 50mm Summicron and an M8 body to test and have even given me a loan of an M8 while my baby is on holidays in Germany for a little rangefinder calibration (picture taken with M8 and 35mm Summicron, no filter).

Photo taken from the front window of Bewley’s Cafe on Grafton street Dublin. Processed in Aperture 3.2.2 and Photoshop CS5.

Shot details :- ISO 160, 35mm, 0 ev, f/2, 1/500

Hardly got a chance to take pictures this week. Don’t know how I ever completed a 365 last year.

This is one of Howth Harbour taken earlier today. There were some fairly dramatic clouds around, and when I saw the small yacht sailing towards the harbour I thought It would make a nice image. I like this picture except for the fact that the yacht is not totally separated form the harbour. I think it would make a much stronger image if the yacht was just a little bit lower. Ah! well, you cant win ‘em all.

Shot processed in Aperture 3.2.2 and Nik Silver Efex Pro.

Shot details :- ISO 160, 35mm, 0 ev, f/2, 1/4000

BTW I shot this at f/2 because I was testing out the infinity focus on my Leica lenses at the time.

Took a trip into the Natural History and National Museum of Ireland in Dublin today with my son Jack. Jack is animal crazy and I had promised him a trip to the museum for a long time. We had a great time looking at all the different species of native animals. However, the “World Animal” collection upstairs was Jack’s favorite with Hippo’s, Elephants, Whales, Eagles, Sharks and lots more.

Its a real pity that the two balcony levels above are now closed to the public. I remember walking around up there as a kid looking at the smaller animal collection and listening to the creaky floor boards. Its amazing that entrance is still free to these wonderful national collections of animal specimens and treasures. I would pay in, its well worth a visit.

So many times I have seen the GAA All Ireland Champions hold this wonderful cup aloft on TV. So it was a real treat to get to photograph the cup. The detail and craftsmanship is beautiful.

Of course we also took the opportunity to get a family photo with it.
