I have seen this shot done lots of times so this is my interpretation of it.
For this shot I placed the straws in a tall glass and taped them together. This allowed me to fire a strobe light through the bottom of the glass. I also used a second strobe camera right to intensify some of the colours. The shot was taken with a 32m extension tube and a 35mm f/2 manual focus lens.
Strobist info :- SB900 camera right @ 1/16. SB600 fired through the bottom of the glass @ 1/16.
