Thought it was time to do another lighting shot. The subject for todays shot is a Phrenology head. Not so long ago it was thought that human characteristics could be directly mapped on to specific areas of the brain. Phrenologists believed that the mind has a set of different mental faculties, with each particular faculty represented in a different area of the brain. These areas were said to be proportional to a person’s propensities, and the importance of the given mental faculty. It was believed that the cranial bone conformed in order to accommodate the different sizes of these particular areas of the brain in different individuals, so that a person’s capacity for a given personality trait could be determined simply by measuring the area of the skull that overlies the corresponding area of the brain.
For todays shot I used an SB900 with a LumiQuest Softbox III, set to +2.0 camera left and an SB600, set to +2.0 camera right. The strobes were set an opposing angles and the shot was taken through the flash from the strobes to cause the background to remain dark. I processed the shot with Aperture 3.0 and Photoshop CS5.
Shot details :- ISO 200, 50mm, 0 ev, f/16, 1/250
